Diwali lanterns, often called “diyas” or “akash kandils,” hold significant meaning during the Festival of Lights, Diwali. They symbolize light triumphing over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.
Traditionally, these lanterns are lit to welcome Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, into homes. The illumination from the lanterns also represents hope, joy, and the spirit of celebration. They are often used in decorations to enhance the festive atmosphere, reflecting the overall theme of renewal and positivity associated with Diwali.
Making an akash kandil (sky lantern) at home can be a fun and creative project for Diwali! Here’s a simple way to create one using readily available materials:
Materials Needed:
- Colored paper or craft paper (lightweight)
- Scissors
- String or thread
- A circular frame (can be made from bamboo sticks, wire, or a sturdy paper circle)
- Glue or tape
- LED lights or small candles (if you plan to use real flames, ensure it’s safe and supervised)
- Decorative items (like glitter, sequins, or stickers) for embellishment
Instructions:
- Create the Frame:
- Use bamboo sticks or wire to create a circular frame. If using paper, cut out a large circle for the base and smaller circles for the top and bottom.
- Cut the Paper:
- Cut colored paper into rectangles (about 8-10 inches wide and 12-18 inches tall). You’ll need several pieces to form the sides of the lantern.
- Attach the Paper:
- Glue or tape the paper pieces around the frame. Ensure that they are secured well and leave the top open for air circulation.
- Make the Bottom:
- Cut a circle from the colored paper to serve as the base. Attach it to the bottom of the lantern, ensuring it’s secure.
- Add a Top:
- Cut another circle (slightly larger than the bottom) for the top. This helps keep the shape intact and adds stability.
- Decorate:
- Use glitter, sequins, or stickers to decorate your akash kandil. Get creative and personalize it!
- Create a Handle:
- Attach a string or thread at the top for hanging. Make sure it’s strong enough to support the lantern.
- Add Lighting:
- Place an LED light or a small candle inside the lantern. If using a candle, ensure it’s stable and supervised.
- Hang Your Lantern:
- Find a suitable place to hang your akash kandil, preferably where it can be admired and adds to the festive ambiance.
Safety Tips:
- If using real flames, always supervise the lantern to prevent fire hazards.
- Use LED lights for a safer option.
